Van Gaal's football philosophy 'lost in translation'

Lou Macari and Ron Atkinson have questioned the Dutchman's tactics and decision to leave out Falcao as LVG's misfiring side failed to hit the target against Southampton

Before Manchester United hosted Southampton, Louis van Gaal made great play of the fact he finally had a full-strength squad from which to select.

“Can you believe it,” beamed the Dutchman, his voice heavy with sarcasm. “We only have one player injured. I have to select, for the first time in my career at Manchester United, the 11 and the 18 players.”

A little over 48 hours later and Van Gaal was left to rue that moment of mockery, as United lost 1-0 and failed to produce a single shot on target. So much for having all of the players at his disposal.

Worryingly, for United, after an unprecedented summer spend of £150million, they remain on the same number of points as they were at this stage last season under David Moyes, who was shown the door three months later.

While there is no question of Van Gaal suffering the same fate as Moyes, there are concerns the 63-year-old’s much-heralded “philosophy”, which he said would take three months to take effect, has been lost in translation.
