Arsene Wenger: There was much more in this game than a 2-0 defeat....?

Arsene Wenger was confronted by a furious fan during Arsenal’s calamitous defeat at St Mary’s.

Southampton believe it was a Gunners supporter who had got into the home end and went up to the away dug-out to angrily remonstrate with Wenger.

A fan was later arrested after stewards intervened and dragged him down the tunnel in the closing stages of the game.

Gunners boss Wenger, who has endured a long-running campaign by a section of the fans to force him out, played down the incident, saying he thought it was a home fan.

Wenger said: “It was a young boy, yes. I think he was a Southampton fan. He was not aggressive at all. I don’t think he said anything.”

Wenger, who will recall No.2 keeper David Ospina for the FA Cup third-round tie against Hull on Sunday, said: “I don’t want to talk about him (Szczesny).

“We had regrets that we lost this game because it was a bit of a self-inflicted defeat.

“We made the mistakes in our final third that allowed them to win the game. It’s unfortunate, but there was much more in this game than a 2-0 defeat.
