Frank Lampard keen to seal Manchester City’s title bid...

This was a game that was quickly threatening to disappear amidst a haze of New Years Day hangovers and the induced lethargy that the festive period can bring.

Forty-five minutes of inaction was threatening to drop City further behind in the title race and more dropped points after the 2-2 draw against Burnley would have been a huge blow for their title ambitions.

Then we had ourselves a game. The first-half funk dissipated, like the effects of a collectively-induced Alka Seltzer had finally begun to kick in and lift the fog. After being continually frustrated by an obdurate and disciplined Sunderland defence, Yaya Toure took matters into his own hands by striking a venomous 25 yard effort into the top corner.

Having awoken from its slumber the game suddenly sparked into life, but City’s goal kick-started a crazed passage of play, as if the effects of the previous night had yet to fully wear off, with four goals in just seven minutes as City contrived to let slip yet another two-goal lead (in a twist of irony both from former City players in Jack Rodwell and Adam Johnson).
