The 24-year-old goalkeeper is close to dislodging Iker Casillas from the No 1 position in the Spain squad, he is rapidly emerging as one of the best in the world and, despite settling into a comfortable lifestyle in Manchester with his family, continues to be pulled in the direction of Madrid – his home city – not least because of his long-term relationship with the Spanish pop star, Edurne Almagro Garcia
United may have to accept an inevitability that De Gea will eventually pursue a return to Spain with Real, just as Cristiano Ronaldo’s stay at Old Trafford always appeared destined to be cut short by the lure of the Spanish giants.
So what are the chances of David de Gea leaving Manchester United in favour of a move to Real Madrid?
With Euro 2016 on the horizon and Vicente del Bosque ready to promote De Gea to the No 1 spot with Spain, it would be a risk for the 24-year-old to take on Casillas on two fronts in the build-up to the European Championships.
United admit to being ‘relaxed’ over De Gea’s situation. A contract offer is on the table and the salary on offer will match, or even better, anything tabled by Real.
But De Gea’s decision will not come down to money, it will be based on his confidence in United’s trophy-winning prospects outweighing his yearning for a return to Spain at some point in his career.
And with Casillas seemingly having at least two good years ahead of him and Ancelotti unlikely to want to spark a power struggle with one of his most influential players, United and De Gea would appear a perfect fit for another couple of years at least
