Raheem Sterling may have Kop-ped his fair share of criticism this season, yet his performances for both Liverpool and England have the player rated as one of the most valuable assets in the world.
A list of the top 50 most valuable players published by think tank, CIES Football Observatory, ranks the 20-year-old in seventh place with an estimated value of £50m, where he sits ahead of stars such as Gareth Bale (10th), Neymar (11th) and Alexis Sanchez (ninth).
The list, according to the CIES (International Centre for Sports Studies) website, values a player using variables including an econometric model which refers to a player’s performance, taking into account their matches, goals and dribbling success, as well as the characteristics, competition level and the results achieved by their domestic and national sides.
These figures, it could be argued, may back up why the player infamously pulled out of England’s Euro 2016 qualifier in Estonia last September citing he needed a rest having been ‘too tired’ to carry out his international duties.
Through the use of an ‘exclusive algorithm developed on the basis of over 1,500 fee paying transfers occurred since 2009′, the Reds and England star is now valued significantly more then the modest £600,000 then-boss Rafa Benitez paid to pluck the player from the Queens Park Rangers academy in 2010.
At £173m, Barcelona’s Lionel Messi tops the list ahead of La Liga rival Cristiano Ronaldo, who sits second with a value of £104m.As England’s highest ranked player on the chart, Sterling sits some way ahead of nearest countryman Wayne Rooney, who is down in joint-27th, alongside Luca Modric, with a worth in the region of £30m.
Ross Barkley, again linked with a move away from Everton this transfer window, also made the cut with a suggested price of £25m, as does Jack Wilshere.
The Arsenal midfielder, currently sidelined with an ankle injury, is ranked 49th, with a similar value to Barkley. If such statistics are to be believed, Real Madrid splashed out over the odds to bring Bale to Los Galacticos in 2013.
The former Tottenham player is ranked more in the region of £47m, as opposed to the World-record £86m the Spanish giants splashed out on the Wales international.
Other notable names to make the list from the Premier League include Angel Di Maria and Manchester United team-mates Juan Mata and Robin van Persie, while Chelsea are well stocked in the standings.
Eden Hazard leads the way in third (£77.6m), followed in fourth by Diego Costa, Fabregas, Oscar and Thibaut Courtois.Sergio Aguero (sixth), Vincent Kompany, Romelu Lukaku, Christian Eriksen and David Silva also made the cut, as did Philippe Coutinho.
