Should Fabregas’ Champions League goal against Schalke have been ruled out

Cesc Fabregas opened the scoring for Chelsea in their Champions League clash against Schalke on Wednesday – but it was the Spaniard’s apparent foul on Max Meyer in the build-up to the goal that got fans debating on social media.

After a dominating opening period for The Blues, Fabregas slid in to win possession off Meyer – in a challenge that looked to be a foul – before Eden Hazard picked up the ball and made a fine run into the box.

The Belgium international then passed back to Fabregas, who coolly slotted into the net to give Jose Mourinho’s side a 1-0 lead at Stamford Bridge.

As the Chelsea players celebrated, their opponents were left complaining to referee Ivan Bebek about the 27-year-old’s foul on Meyer in the lead-up to the goal.

However, the Croatian official waved away the Schalke players’ appeals and instead showed Klaas-Jan Huntelaar a yellow card for his protests.
