Jose Mourinho was calling Manuel Pellegrini “Pellegrino” after Sunday’s game and I suppose he will do whatever he thinks is best for him.
If people think he is being disrespectful, he won’t be too bothered. I would not think Pellegrini is too bothered – he is long enough out of the cradle not to take much notice.
Managers sometimes target a rival as a way of getting at the team so they can get into the players’ minds. They have a go at a rival to see how he reacts and what effect that then has on the team.
Maybe that’s what Jose is trying to do with Pellegrini, but he is the only person who could tell you.
I never tried mind games because I didn’t have to, and it didn’t make any difference to me if someone tried it. In 1995 when Blackburn were going for the title, Fergie said something like we would have to do a Devon Loch not to win it. That didn’t bother me and I just said: “Is that a lake in Scotland?”
For me, if someone is trying to be disrespectful and undermine you, that’s good. They are worried about you, so just let them keep talking.
