5 things we learned from Arsenal’s week

Five things learned from Gunners' week

Proper football returned this week after the tedium that is the international break. While it was relatively quiet in Goonerland until the weekend’s game against Manchester City, here are five things we learned from Arsenal’s week.

Some fans never learn.

After the way some Arsenal fans treated Aaron Ramsey when he was out of form, you would think that lessons might have been learnt and that Mesut Ozil would not be getting abuse from them. Not so, it seems, with a growing number of fans, who likely base their opinions of the German on Match of the Day highlights and press reports, calling for his removal from the starting line up.

Abou Diaby is fit.

The midfielder played a full 90 minutes for the under-21’s as they defeated Aston Villa on Thursday. The Frenchman has been wrapped in cotton wool by Shad Forsythe as the club look to find a way past the recurring injury problems he has suffered since he had his leg smashed to pieces not long after joining the club. If they can get him fit, and keep him fit, a massive ‘if’ I know, then Arsenal will have another immense player for their midfield. You don’t always get what you deserve in football, but surely Diaby now deserves his chance to resurrect his career. Don’t you agree, football gods?

Where Serge Gnabry is

The German youngster has been missing since the end of March with a knee injury that the club seemed very reluctant to talk about. Gnabry has finally returned to training, although after such a lengthy layoff it is likely to be some time yet before he’s back playing properly.

Alexis Sanchez is the real deal

Watching him buzz around the pitch against Manchester City was a thing of beauty. He has passion, desire and an immense work-ethic, all topped off with pace and world-class ability. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t end the season as the best summer signing. Plus – he did it in a big game, isn’t that how we are supposed to define the ability of a player?

Jack Wilshere hasn’t lost it

Arsene Wenger revealed that Wilshere had been hesitant in games because of his ankle, a problem that has no doubt contributed to his lack of form over recent times. Now, after his display for England and Arsenal against Manchester City, it seems as if the midfielder has finally overcome the mental block that has been holding him back. Admitting that he has been working with the club’s psychologist, Wilshere will be hoping he can enjoy a Ramsey-esque renaissance – as will every Arsenal fan on the planet.
