Football fans are funny creatures.
100 people can watch the same game and end up drawing completely different conclusions about the match and what they witnessed over the course of 90 minutes. While some disagreement is natural, at times, I really do wonder if we are all watching the same spectacle.
Here are five of the most ridiculous knee-jerk reactions from Arsenal’s game again Manchester City which saw the Gunners come from behind only to drop points late in the game.
Mesut Ozil should be sold.
While I’ll concede that the German has been somewhat underwhelming recently, he hasn’t been anywhere close to as bad as is being claimed by some, and certainly doesn’t deserve to be sold as one fan was demanding.
Playing with a languid style, he is often accused of being disinterested which is really not the case of all. What sort of madness is it to think the club’s most expensive signing should be sold just 12 months after he arrived?
Aaron Ramsey should be dropped.
The Welshman is another who has seemed a little off the pace this season, but that is perhaps only because he set such incredibly high standards over the past 18 months.
He still managed an assist on Saturday, an 88% pass accuracy rate, three key passes, four tackles, and three interceptions.
He did turn the ball over more than any other Arsenal player during the game, but was Arsenal’s fifth highest-rated player on the day – that’s neither exceptional nor horrendous.
Wojciech Szczesny should be dropped.
Many are blaming the keeper for Manchester City’s second goal but had he not dived for the ball and Mathieu Flamini, who was on the line, had not managed to clear it either, then questions would have been asked about why he didn’t move to try and save it.
Keepers are an easy target. When they make a mistake it’s usually costly, mostly because they are the very last line of defence. While David Ospina is an excellent option to have on the bench, Woj is not to blame for the dropped points.
The referee favoured Arsenal.
City’s manager, Manuel Pellegrini, leapt to his own knee-jerk reaction shortly after the final whistle, by claiming that there were fouls in the build up to both of Arsenal’s goals and pointing towards the referee as a deciding factor in the game.
He conveniently neglected to mention that James Milner went on a rampage around the pitch without punishment, Fernandinho kicked the ball away while already on a booking, and Vincent Kompany was also fortunate not to see red for two yellows. Mark Clattenburg had a poor game, but for both sides.
Wenger doesn’t have it in him to win.
Unbeaten in the league at home in 20 games and FA Cup final winners just a few months ago. Shut up.
