Arsenal’s transfer ignorance could cost them PL title again...

Arsenal paying for transfer ignorance, but Welbeck and Wilshere offer reason for hope

Arsenal took what in the end felt like a grateful point against Manchester City yesterday. Here are a few things we learned.

1. Welbeck might be the right cog

Many fancy strikers passed Arsenal by this summer and Danny Welbeck didn’t ever seem like the obvious choice or the choice of ambition some, including myself, had wanted.

However, after letting the dust settle, it’s clear the boy from the north has something to offer.

Namely… a bit of pace. He gives us options on the counter attack, he can hold the ball up and he’s very strong in the air. He was unlucky not to score with a classy chip over Joe Hart early on.

He is going to be good and he’s at the age where he could become a great.

2. Transfer ignorance will cost us

It’s clear that Arsenal’s summer on the transfer front was far from ideal.

We only have six senior defenders, which now sits at five with Debuchy injured. We’re going to really struggle.

No room for rotation during a tough period combined with a lack of experience really isn’t going to help us.

The other glaring deficiency in our midfield was the lack of a proper defensive midfielder. Arteta and Flamini simply aren’t the ticket in the fastest league in the world. It’s a real worry with no obvious solution.

3. Jack might find himself

Jack Wilshere took a lot of flak last season for some pretty horrible performances combined with some bad boy antics off the pitch.

This season, he’s looked a different beast. He’s making himself accountable, he’s found his touch and he looks ready to boss games like he did when he burst onto the scene.

His goal yesterday was sublime, his assist for Sanchez was speculative but exactly what you want from a bruiser of a midfielder.

Ideally, I’d love him to find space when he’s powering through a midfield… he likes the fight more than the space sometimes, but that’ll change with maturity.

A point was probably fair in the end, but if we want to start being taken seriously as contenders, we need to convert home games into wins against top teams.
