Return: Cesc Fabregas celebrates scoring at the Emirates for Arsenal in 2009
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger wants Cesc Fabregas back – and Barcelona are ready to do business, write Alan Nixon and Dean Jones for The Sunday People.
Wenger has the funds to splash out on the midfielder, with senior sources at the Emirates and Nou Camp signalling a move is on for a potential fee of £30million.
But the Gunners’ bid to seal an emotional return for Fabregas will not be straightforward as Manchester City are hovering and hope they can throw a spanner in the works by declaring an interest .
Yaya Toure’s future is up in the air at City following his ridiculous birthday tantrum and the Premier League champions are believed to be looking at Fabregas as an opportunity to replace him.
The Spaniard is an intriguing option as he would count as a home-grown player, having joined Arsenal from the Catalan club at the age of 16.
His place in the Barca side is under threat with new coach Luis Enrique keen to promote Rafinha after working with him at the manager’s former club Celta Vigo.
Fabregas, 27, went home to Barcelona three seasons ago for £30m.
Arsenal have a buy-back option if the player indicates he is keen to return and Barca are likely to try to recoup most of what they paid for him.
Fabregas – who has 87 Spain caps and is in the squad for the Brazil World Cup – flirted heavily with Manchester United last summer, but the Old Trafford club are not in the frame this time round.
