Jose Mourinho has confirmed he wants Cesc Fabregas at Stamford Bridge.
The Special One will offer Fabregas £200,000 a week to replace Frank Lampard as the heartbeat of Chelsea’s midfield.
In a move that will enrage Arsenal fans – who regard Stamford Bridge as a no-go area for Gunners since Ashley Cole’s defection in 2006 – Mourinho will take his summer spending to £62m, after also agreeing to spring the £32m release clause for Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa.
Asked if there was any interest in bringing Fabregas to the Bridge, Mourinho replied: “We have some.
“I have been analysing the situation, I think it looks like he’s really interested in leaving Barcelona and is very, very interested in coming back to England.
“He wants to come to England because it’s the country where he wants to be, where he prefers to play.
“We are interested in monitoring that situation.”
Spain World Cup defender Gerard Pique mischievously let slip that an unnamed club had all but completed a €33m deal for Fabregas.
Microphones captured Pique telling Spain coach Vicente del Bosque: “He already told me it’s done. He is leaving for €33m.”
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has so far declined to invoke Arsenal’s first refusal on buying back 27-year-old Fabregas.
