Raising the bar: Paul Pogba should be an integral part of Manchester United's new-look side
He might be 'the one that got away' for Manchester United, but now the Red Devils should bring him back and build a side around him, writes Steve Bates
Sir Alex Ferguson always claimed there were two stars he wanted to sign most for Manchester United – Alan Shearer and Paul Gascoigne.
Even now, in his retirement, they remain the ones that got away at Old Trafford. Two outstanding players who could, perhaps, have added even more layers of success at the club.
But a legion of United fans know there's another name to add to that list – and it's a player who is making a name for himself at Brazil 2014.
Paul Pogba is the 21-year-old Juventus midfield powerhouse making Didier Deschamps' Les Bleus tick at this World Cup.
Statuesque, Imposing, athletic and with an eye for a goal Pogba, similar in style to Patrick Vieira, is everything United's midfield needs – and more.
But the sickening reality for every United fan who watched Juventus last season and is tuning in to events in Brazil is that Pogba came through the ranks at Old Trafford.
Hot property: There could be a bidding war over Pogba this summer
By rights Pogba should now be the cornerstone of Louis van Gaal's rebuilding.
He should be the heartbeat of a team desperate for a new midfield hero in the mould of Roy Keane, Bryan Robson and Paul Scholes.
Instead, he's a target for Real Madrid, Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Paris St German. Oh, and United.
At a staggering £60 million.
The story goes that United let Pogba run down his contract because they wouldn't bow to wage demands in talks driven by his agent Mino Raiola.
Yet 18-months later, with Ferguson gone, United paid the kind of money Pogba was demanding to keep Adnan Januzaj from the clutches of the same big clubs now chasing the Frenchman.
