SEVEN Signings Arsenal Need To Make This Summer

If Arsenal lose the players they are expected to lose this summer, then two or three signings simply won't cut it, writes John Cross

A few weeks ago, Wenger was making noises behind the scenes about a raft of new signings, bolstering the squad in various areas.

Now, it's more like two or three new signings to strengthen a set-up which topped the Premier League for longer during the season than any other club.

Sadly for Arsenal and Wenger, there are no trophies for being top the longest. The trophy is given out to the team which finishes top at the end of the season.

You can point to bad luck and injuries (and Wenger certainly has) but there are lessons to be learnt even after Arsenal's glorious FA Cup win which ended their nine-year wait for a trophy.

And, in fact, they need to learn lessons from Wembley. To bolster the midfield, strengthen the defence and improve the forward line.

If they could get a player of the calibre of Karim Benzema or Mario Mandzukic then suddenly the excitement levels will rise again.

Make no mistake. Arsenal have got the cash in reserve to make those sorts of signings. My hope is with this new contract and a new ambition, Wenger has a new outlook to build on and improve on the season just gone.

Mesut Ozil represented a new dawn. At £42m, the German was a big money superstar signing. They've got the cash to go back for Julian Draxler if they want to.

Maybe Arsenal would be interested in going back in time to get Cesc Fabregas. They have got a buy-back clause so, if any club makes an offer, then Arsenal have to be informed.

If they don't take it up, they get a chunk of the profit on the deal with another club. That's a win-win for Arsenal.

But Arsenal must be bold this summer. There's certainly the will and resources. But will Wenger's new contract also mark the beginning of a new dawn for the club and the manager? Let's hope so. They need him to do just that.
